Products Description
The chemical composition of St37 steel plays a fundamental role in determining its physical and mechanical properties, with the primary constituents being iron, carbon, and manganese. The steel's versatility and strength are directly influenced by these components, which define its durability, corrosive resistance, and thermal conductivity.
The NMening process, which involves heating the steel above its critical temperature and then rapidly cooling it, further enhances these properties. This process changes the steel's microstructure, increasing its NMness and strength.
Moreover, the carburizing process can also be used to improve St37 steel's mechanical properties. This thermochemical treatment enriches the steel's surface layer with carbon, thereby enhancing its wear resistance. Care must be taken, however, to ensure the carbon content in the surface layer does not exceed 0.9%, as this could lead to the formation of cementite and increase the steel's vulnerability.
Physical properties of both SS400 and mild steel play a significant role in determining their suitability for different applications.
The SS400 has a density of 7.85g/cm3, which influences its weight and strength. Its NMness is measured in the Brinell scale, showing relatively low NMness but reasonable toughness, providing good resistance to cracking.
The thermal conductivity of SS400 is approximately 25.93 W/mK, allowing heat to distribute evenly across the material, making it suitable for applications requiring temperature stability. The electrical conductivity, while not its primary feature, is sufficient for most construction applications. Its magnetic properties are comparable to that of mild steel, making it suitable for applications where magnetism is essential.
On the other hand, mild steel has a similar density to SS400, contributing to its strength and weight characteristics. It exhibits a higher NMness but lower toughness than the SS400, making it less resistant to cracking but more durable.
The table below provides a concise comparison of the typical chemical compositions of SS400 and mild steel:
| Symbol of grade | C | Mn | P | S |
| SS400 | - | - | ≤0.050 | ≤0.050 |
