C Channel Steel Beams
Standard Channels Products Description
A channel, also known as C-channel or parallel flange channel (PFC), is a (usually structural steel) beam used primarily in building construction and civil engineering. Its cross-section consists of a wide "web", which is usually (but not always) perpendicular to the "web", and two "flanges", which are located at the top and bottom of the "web" and extend only to one side of the "web". It differs from I-beam, H-beam or W-beam sections in that these have flanges on both sides of the web.
Channels are not used as much as symmetrical beams in construction, partly because the axis of bending of the channel is not centered over the width of the flange. If the same load is applied at its top, the beam will tend to twist away from the web.
Channels or C-beams are often used to mount the back of the web from one plane to the other to maximize the contact area. They are also sometimes welded back-to-back to form non-standard I-beams.
