Comparison of ASTM A283C to A36 steel is basically determined by the manganese content in the chemical composition as well as the carbon equivalent value (CEV).

 

A36 steel CEV = 0.25 + 0.4/24 = 0.266% and A283C CEV = 0.24 + 0.4/24 + 0.9/6 = 0.406%. Therefore, A283C steel has a higher carbon equivalent than A36 steel.

 

ASTM A283C h beam steel structure and A36 h section steel beams are not exactly the same, but they are very close. Based on weldability, A36 h shaped beams may be considered as an alternative to ASTM A283C, but if it is decided to use A36 h shaped iron beams as an alternative to ASTM A283C, further engineering approval will be required.
