• Chemical composition: The main chemical composition of SUS420J1 stainless steel includes carbon (C), silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), sulfur (S) and chromium (Cr). Among them, the content of carbon is between 0.18-0.22%, and the content of chromium is between 12.00-14.00%.
• Physical properties: the density of SUS420J1 is 7.75 g/cm³, the modulus of elasticity is 200-210 GPa, the thermal conductivity is 25-30 W/(m-K), and the coefficient of thermal expansion is about 11-12 × 10-⁶/K The coefficient of thermal expansion is about 11-12 × 10⁶/K.
• Mechanical properties: SUS420J1 has a yield strength ≥ 225 N/mm², tensile strength ≥ 440 N/mm², NMness ≤ HB223, ductility ≥ 12%, and elongation at break ≥ 50% 2. After appropriate heat treatment, the NMness can be further increased and reach HRC 50-55.
• Heat treatment process: The heat treatment process of SUS420J1 includes annealing, quenching and tempering. Annealing temperature is generally 650-750°C, holding time and then slowly cooled; quenching temperature of about 920-980°C, oil cooling quenching, tempering temperature of 600-750°C, air cooling.

SUS420J1 stainless steel is widely used in the fields of tool making, mould making, high precision parts manufacturing, injection moulds and so on due to its high NMness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. Specific applications include knives, cutting tools, medical surgical blades, moulds, stamping parts, pressure machine parts, bearings, valves and transmission parts.
