SS540 structural caogang is a high-strength structural carbon steel grade defined by Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) G3101:2004, a hot rolled steel product with a C-shaped cross-section, commonly used as a structural component of frames, brackets and other load-bearing structures.

 

Chemical composition of SS54 carbon structural channel

Carbon (C): ≤ 0.30% – helps improve NMness and strength.

Manganese (Mn): ≤ 1.60% – improves tensile strength and wear resistance.

Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.05% – improves machinability, but kept at a low level to avoid brittleness.

Sulfur (S): ≤ 0.05% – acts as a deoxidizer, but excessive amounts reduce ductility.

Iron (Fe): Balance – forms the main structural basis of steel.

Manufacturing process of SS540 c channel

Raw material preparation: GNEE sources high-quality steel billets, mainly composed of iron with controlled carbon and manganese content.
Hot rolling: The billets are heated and formed into C-shaped channels through rollers, ensuring consistency in shape and mechanical properties.
Cooling: Controlled cooling maintains the strength and toughness of the steel.
Surface treatment (optional): Galvanizing or painting can be used to improve resistance to environmental factors such as corrosion.

 

Comparison with other grades

SS400 channel beam: A more common JIS grade with lower yield strength (245 MPa) and tensile strength (400-510 MPa), suitable for less demanding applications.
SS490 c channel beam: An intermediate option with yield strength ≥325 MPa and tensile strength ≥490 MPa, lower strength than SS540.
ASTM A36 (USA) structural channel : A similar mild steel with a tensile strength of 400-550 MPa, but SS540 guarantees a minimum tensile strength of 540 MPa.
