What is ASTM A588 Angle Steel?
ASTM A588 Angle is a structural steel section manufactured from ASTM A588 high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) weathering steel, specifically designed for engineering projects exposed to outdoor atmospheric conditions over long periods.
The steel contains weathering alloying elements such as Copper (Cu: 0.20–0.40%), Chromium (Cr: 0.40–0.70%), Nickel (Ni: up to 0.65%), and small amounts of Phosphorus.
Through the combined action of these alloying elements, a dense and stable protective oxide layer (patina) forms on the steel surface, effectively reducing the penetration of moisture, oxygen, and other corrosive agents.
Compared with conventional carbon steel, ASTM A588 Angle offers approximately 4–8 times greater atmospheric corrosion resistance. In many industrial and architectural environments, it can achieve a service life of more than 50 years, whereas ordinary carbon steel often requires frequent anti-corrosion maintenance under similar conditions.

Due to its superior weathering properties, ASTM A588 Angle can significantly reduce or even eliminate the need for periodic painting, resulting in an estimated 30%–60% reduction in life-cycle maintenance costs.ASTM A588 Angle combines high strength with outstanding weather resistance. It provides a minimum yield strength of 50 ksi (345 MPa) and a minimum tensile strength of 70 ksi (485 MPa).
Compared with conventional structural carbon steel angles such as ASTM A36, ASTM A588 Angle not only delivers higher mechanical strength but can also extend service life by approximately 2–4 times in atmospheric exposure conditions, substantially reducing repair, replacement, and downtime costs caused by corrosion.
ASTM A588 Angle is widely used in bridge construction, building frameworks, transmission towers, railway infrastructure, port facilities, architectural landscaping, and various steel structures that are continuously exposed to outdoor environments.
What is ASTM A36 Angle Steel?
ASTM A36 Angle is one of the most widely used hot-rolled carbon structural steel sections, valued for its balanced mechanical properties and cost-effectiveness in construction and engineering applications.
The steel has a minimum yield strength of 36 ksi (250 MPa) and a tensile strength of 58–80 ksi (400–550 MPa), making it suitable for most general structural load-bearing requirements.
ASTM A36 Angle is available in both equal-leg and unequal-leg configurations. It is widely used in building structures, steel-framed workshops, transmission towers, communication towers, equipment supports, and various industrial fabrication projects. It is also commonly used in shelving systems, machinery manufacturing, and metal component fabrication.

A588 Angle Steel And A36 Angle Steel Application
ASTM A588 Angle offers approximately 4–8 times higher atmospheric corrosion resistance than conventional carbon steel. It can form a stable and dense protective rust layer during long-term outdoor exposure, significantly reducing coating and maintenance costs (by up to around 30–60%).
Compared with standard carbon steel, it is more suitable for long-term outdoor exposed environments such as bridge construction, transmission towers, communication towers, railway infrastructure, port structures, and various heavy-duty outdoor steel projects.
ASTM A36 Angle, on the other hand, is widely used in indoor or coated environments such as industrial workshops, building frameworks, equipment supports, storage racks, and general structural steel applications due to its low cost and good fabrication performance.
