What is Corten Steel B Plate

CORTEN B Steel Plates are roll formed; their light bodies form a rust crust when they come in contact with the atmosphere, defending the underlying steel from getting corroded.

This process gives it a distinction above the usual steel plates used across a plethora of industries. BS 4360 WR 50 C Steel Plates have a low phosphorous content and are a viable option for other structural steels.

Corten B steel is highly valued for its high strength and weathering properties, but requires careful handling during transportation and storage to maintain its quality and ensure optimal performance.

Improper handling may cause surface damage, accelerate corrosion, or compromise structural integrity. Following these key points will keep your Corten B steel in top condition.

Corten B1. Proper Packaging During Transportation

When transporting Corten B steel, use waterproof tarpaulins or plastic sheeting for secure packaging. Insert wooden spacers at least 10–20 mm thick between steel plates to prevent friction damage during transit. For shipments exceeding 7 days or potentially exposed to humid conditions, apply rust inhibitors or desiccants to reduce corrosion risk.

2. Prevent Exposure to Moisture

Corten B steel naturally develops a protective rust layer in outdoor environments. However, premature moisture exposure during transport or storage may cause uneven rusting or staining. Store steel in warehouses with **relative humidity below 60%** and avoid contact with standing water.

3. Maintain Proper Stacking

To prevent deformation, ensure steel plates are stacked evenly on level ground. Use wooden pallets or steel supports at least 100 mm high to elevate plates off the ground. Single-layer stacks should not exceed 1.5 m in height to avoid excessive pressure causing material distortion.

4. Ensure Air Circulation

For temporary outdoor storage, maintain a 20–30 mm gap between stacked Corten B steel plates to allow airflow. This reduces moisture accumulation and condensation, minimizing corrosion risks. If stored outdoors for over 30 days, periodically rotate and inspect the steel surfaces.

5. Conduct Regular Inspections

Inspect the steel every 7–10 days to check for water accumulation, rust spots, or physical damage. Address any issues promptly to prevent long-term deterioration.

By implementing these transportation and storage measures, you can effectively safeguard the performance and longevity of Corten B steel, ensuring it delivers its intended quality without compromise throughout your project.
