In the world of constructed facilities, where safety is paramount, traceability and verification are not optional-they are foundational. The Heat Number (also called Melt Number) and its associated Mill Test Certificate (MTC) or Certificate of Compliance (COC) are the linchpins of this quality assurance system. They transform a piece of steel from a commodity into a fully characterized, documented engineering component.

Heat Number: This is a unique alphanumeric code assigned to a single batch of molten steel (typically 100-300 tons) produced in a basic oxygen furnace or electric arc furnace. All material originating from that single, homogeneous melt shares this number. It is permanently marked on the steel, usually by stenciling or tagging at the mill.

Mill Test Certificate: This is the legal and technical birth certificate for that heat of steel. It is generated by the producing mill and provides verified test data. A comprehensive MTC for A572 will include:

Purchaser & Order Details: Project name, purchase order number.

Product Description: Quantity, size (e.g., W21x62), length.

Material Specification: ASTM A572 Grade 50 or 60.

Heat Number/Cast Number: The key traceability identifier.

Chemical Analysis: Results of spectrographic analysis for C, Mn, P, S, Si, Cb, V, etc., confirming compliance with the ASTM limits.

Mechanical Test Results: Actual values (not just "pass") from tensile tests performed on coupons taken from the finished product. This includes:

Yield Strength (actual ksi)

Tensile Strength (actual ksi)

Elongation (%)

Reduction of Area (%)

Supplementary Test Results: If specified, Charpy V-Notch impact test results at a given temperature.

Statement of Compliance: A signed declaration from the mill's quality manager that the material conforms to the cited standards (A572 and A6).

Why is this so critical?

Design Verification: The engineer of record can verify that the steel delivered to the job site has the actual strength properties assumed in their design calculations. The 50 or 60 ksi is a minimum; the MTC shows the actual (often higher) strength.

Fabrication & Welding: The chemical analysis, particularly the Carbon Equivalent value (calculated from C, Mn, etc.), informs the welder what preheat and interpass temperatures are required per codes like AWS D1.1 to avoid hydrogen-induced cracking.

Quality Audits & Non-Conformance: If a problem is suspected (e.g., a crack during fabrication), the heat number allows the entire supply chain-fabricator, erector, inspector-to trace the material back to its origin and review its original test data.

Regulatory & Third-Party Requirements: Building departments, insurance companies, and project owners routinely require MTCs as part of the project submittal package. They are non-negotiable for major structural work.

In essence, the heat number and MTC close the quality loop, providing objective, auditable proof that the installed steel possesses the properties upon which the structural integrity of the building or bridge depends.
