EN 10025-2 classifies H-beam grades by yield strength and impact resistance:
Strength grades: S235 (235MPa yield), S275 (275MPa), S355 (355MPa), S450 (450MPa). Higher numbers indicate greater load-bearing capacity.
Impact toughness suffixes: JR (20°C impact test), J0 (-20°C), J2 (-40°C). For example, S355J2 offers toughness at -40°C, suitable for cold climates.
Additional properties: Some grades include "N" (normalized) for improved ductility or "M" (thermo-mechanically rolled) for better strength-to-weight ratios.
EN 10025-6 specifies high-strength grades (S460, S690) for heavy-duty applications like offshore platforms, with yield strengths up to 690MPa. These grades require stricter chemical composition controls (e.g., lower sulfur and phosphorus) to enhance weldability and toughness.
