S355JR (European) and Q355B (Chinese) H-beams have nearly identical welding properties, allowing the use of the same welding processes and consumables when substituting:
Weldability Factors:
Carbon Equivalent (CE): S355JR has a CE of ~0.42 (per EN 1011-2), and Q355B has a CE of ~0.41 (per GB/T 19879)-both below 0.45, the threshold for requiring preheating. This means both grades can be welded using standard processes (SMAW, GMAW, TIG) without preheating for sections ≤25 mm thick.
Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ) Behavior: Both grades form ductile HAZ microstructures (ferrite-pearlite) when welded, avoiding brittle martensite. This prevents cracking in the HAZ, a common issue with high-carbon steels.
Consumable Compatibility: Both grades use the same welding consumables (e.g., E5015 for SMAW, ER50-6 for GMAW), as their yield strength (355 MPa) matches the consumables' 490 MPa tensile strength.
Welding Standards Alignment: European EN 1011-2 and Chinese GB/T 985 specify identical welding parameters (current, voltage, travel speed) for S355JR and Q355B. For example, GMAW of 12 mm thick sections uses 220–240 A, 28–30 V, and 300–350 mm/min travel speed for both grades.
This welding compatibility is critical for construction projects, as it allows Chinese welders to use familiar techniques and materials when working with European H-beams, reducing training costs and fabrication errors.
