Low temperatures impact H-beam performance by reducing ductility and increasing brittleness:

Key Challenges:

Below -20°C, the notch toughness (measured by Charpy V-notch test) of standard S235 steel drops sharply, increasing the risk of brittle fracture under impact or dynamic loads. In cold regions like Russia or Canada, untreated H-beams may fail at stress levels 30% below their room-temperature yield strength.

Mitigation Strategies:

Material Selection: Use low-temperature-resistant grades like Q345E (Chinese standard) or ASTM A572 Grade 50, which maintain toughness at -40°C due to alloying elements (nickel, chromium).

Thermal Treatment: Quenching and tempering processes improve ductility, with tempered H-beams achieving Charpy values ≥27J at -20°C, meeting EN 10025-4 requirements for cold climates.

Design Adjustments: Increase flange thickness by 10–15% to compensate for reduced ductility, and use bolted connections (less stress concentration than welds) in critical joints.

Proper cold-weather design ensures H-beams perform reliably in applications like Arctic oil rigs or Canadian cold-storage facilities.
