Manganese (0.80-1.20% in many grades) enhances angle steel's strength and hardenability by forming solid solutions with iron and refining grain structure. It counteracts sulfur's brittleness by forming manganese sulfides, improving hot workability. Excessive manganese (>1.5%) can increase brittleness, especially in low-temperature environments, so most standards restrict its content to optimize toughness and machinability.
