Manganese (1.00–1.60% in 300PLUS®) is the primary strength-enhancing element in PFC steel:
Solid Solution Strengthening: Manganese atoms dissolve into the iron crystal lattice, creating distortions that resist dislocation movement (the mechanism behind plastic deformation). This increases the stress required to bend or stretch the steel, raising both yield (300 MPa) and tensile (450–600 MPa) strength.
Grain Refinement: During hot rolling, manganese promotes the formation of smaller, uniform grains. Smaller grains have more grain boundaries, which act as barriers to dislocation movement, further boosting strength and toughness.Manganese also improves hardenability, ensuring consistent strength across the channel's cross-section-even in thicker flanges or webs. Unlike high-carbon additions, manganese does not significantly reduce weldability when kept within the 1.00–1.60% range. This makes it an ideal strengthener for 300PLUS®, balancing performance and workability for Australian construction needs.
