S355JR (European) and Q355B (Chinese) H-beams have minimal mechanical property differences, with most parameters overlapping to ensure substitution compatibility:
Yield Strength: Both have a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for sections ≤16 mm thick. For thicker sections (16–40 mm), S355JR reduces to 345 MPa, and Q355B also reduces to 345 MPa-full alignment for all practical section sizes.
Tensile Strength: S355JR ranges from 470–630 MPa, while Q355B ranges from 470–630 MPa-identical ranges, ensuring both grades withstand the same maximum loads before fracture.
Elongation: S355JR requires a minimum elongation of 21% (over 50 mm), and Q355B requires 22% (over 50 mm)-a 1% difference that does not impact ductility in structural applications (both grades can be bent, welded, and formed without cracking).
Impact Toughness: The primary difference lies here: S355JR is tested at +20°C (minimum 27 J), while Q355B is tested at 0°C (minimum 34 J). For projects in cold climates (e.g., northeastern China), S355J0 (tested at 0°C, 27 J) or S355J2 (tested at -20°C, 27 J) should be used instead of S355JR to match Q355B's low-temperature performance. In temperate regions, S355JR's +20°C toughness is sufficient, as ambient temperatures rarely drop to levels that risk brittle fracture.
Overall, the mechanical property alignment between S355JR and Q355B is strong, with only minor adjustments needed for cold-climate applications.
