The long-term performance of structures made from S275JR depends almost entirely on three factors: environmental protection, detailing for fatigue (if applicable), and maintenance.
Corrosion Protection (The Most Critical Factor):
Unprotected S275JR will corrode at a rate depending on the atmospheric corrosivity category (C1 to C5 per ISO 9223). In industrial or marine environments (C4, C5), corrosion can be rapid and severe, compromising cross-section and load capacity.
Durability Strategy: A coating system (primer, intermediate, and top coat) selected for the specific environment and with a suitable maintenance interval is essential. Hot-dip galvanizing provides decades of maintenance-free life for many applications and is highly recommended for exposed structures.
Fatigue (For Dynamically Loaded Structures):
S275JR does not have an infinite fatigue life. In bridges, crane runways, or supports for vibrating machinery, fatigue can initiate cracks at stress concentrations over time.
Durability Strategy: Design must follow fatigue design codes (e.g., EN 1993-1-9), which assign lower allowable stresses for connection details (welded, bolted) based on their "detail category." Good detailing to minimize stress raisers and high-quality fabrication (smooth weld transitions, no undercut) are paramount for long fatigue life.
Fire Resistance:
Unprotected S275JR loses strength rapidly in a fire. Its yield strength is roughly halved at 550°C.
Durability Strategy: Building codes require structural fire protection for a specified period (e.g., R30, R60, R90). This is achieved with fireproofing boards, sprays, or intumescent paints that insulate the steel from high temperatures.
Maintenance: A planned inspection and maintenance regime is crucial, especially for the protective coating system. Regular inspections can identify corrosion, damage, or cracking early, allowing for cost-effective repairs.
With appropriate design for the service environment, correct fabrication, and a committed maintenance plan, structures made from S275JR can easily achieve service lives of 50 years or more.
