Characteristics of Q235 Steel
Q235 steel is a commonly used ordinary carbon structural steel with moderate carbon content, giving it well-balanced mechanical properties. Its performance is comprehensive, offering a good combination of strength, plasticity, and weldability.
As the thickness of the steel increases, the yield strength decreases, but it remains suitable for a wide range of applications. Q235 is often processed into pipes, rods, bars, plates, or angle frames and is widely used in engineering, construction, and structural applications.
Q235 steel conforms to PRC standards (GB/T 700) and is considered a carbon steel suitable for general-purpose structural use. For special applications, such as marine structures or bridges, additional carbon structural steel specifications or suffixes may indicate intended use.
Substitution and Equivalent Materials
While Q235 steel generally has slightly lower mechanical properties than A36 steel, the two materials can often be interchanged in practice when no special requirements are imposed.
From a mechanical standpoint, Q235 and A36 exhibit similar performance to high-quality carbon structural steel.
Common equivalent standards include:
A36 – American ASTM/ASME standard
Q235 – Chinese GB/T standard
SS400 – Japanese JIS/Vietnamese standard
These equivalents allow engineers and manufacturers to select materials based on availability, local standards, or specific project requirements without compromising structural integrity.
