Q960E is a high-strength structural steel grade specified in GB/T 16270-2009, the Chinese standard for high-strength structural steel plates in the quenched and tempered condition.

It is designed to provide a minimum yield strength of 960 MPa together with high tensile strength and low-temperature impact toughness for demanding structural applications.

Its chemical composition is controlled according to GB/T 16270-2009 and may include carbon, silicon, manganese, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, copper, boron, vanadium, niobium, and titanium.

The standard specifies maximum limits for these elements and requires grain-refining elements to be added according to the standard requirements. The actual heat analysis should be verified against the manufacturer's mill test certificate for the supplied Q960E plate.

According to GB/T 16270-2009, Q960E has a minimum yield strength of 960 MPa. For plates up to 50 mm thick, the specified tensile strength is 980–1150 MPa, with a minimum elongation of 10%. For Q960E, the E quality grade corresponds to a longitudinal Charpy impact requirement of at least 27 J at -40°C. Actual mechanical properties should be confirmed according to the supplied plate thickness and mill test certificate.

Its combination of high yield strength, tensile strength, and low-temperature toughness makes Q960E suitable for demanding structural applications such as heavy construction machinery, crane booms, mining equipment, heavy-duty vehicles, lifting equipment, and other welded structures where high strength and weight reduction are important.

Its high yield strength allows engineers to consider thinner or lighter structural components in suitable applications, potentially reducing structural weight while maintaining the required load-bearing performance. Any specific weight reduction must be determined through engineering design and should not be assumed solely from the steel grade.

Q960E and ASTM A514 Grade Q are both quenched-and-tempered high-strength structural steels with comparable strength levels, but they are specified under different standards and should not be treated as direct equivalents.

ASTM A514 Grade Q has a minimum yield strength of 100 ksi for plates up to 2.5 inches thick, while Q960E is specified with a minimum yield strength of 960 MPa under GB/T 16270-2009.

Grade selection should therefore be based on the required standard, thickness, mechanical properties, toughness requirements, and project specifications.
