The density of ASTM A36 steel is 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³). This value is consistent for virtually all carbon and low-alloy steels, regardless of grade. It is a critically useful property for:

Weight Calculation: Engineers and fabricators constantly need to calculate the weight of structural members for design, costing, and logistics. The weight of a beam, plate, or bar is calculated as: Weight = Volume × Density. Since the cross-sectional area and length are easily determined, the density allows for quick and accurate weight estimation. This is essential for determining shipping costs, crane capacities, and the dead load a structure must support.

Material Identification: While not definitive, density can be used in conjunction with other tests to help identify an unknown metal. A measured density close to 7.85 g/cm³ strongly suggests a ferrous (iron-based) material like steel.
