ASME SA612 Steel Plate is High Strength Solution for 16% More Efficient TransportationCost-effective material for LPG tanks, spherical storage vessels, and mobile pressure containers.

Boiler and pressure vessel plates, commonly referred to as "vessel plates," are special-purpose steel plates specifically designed for the manufacture of boilers, pressure vessels, and other equipment subjected to internal or external pressure. They must operate safely and reliably over long periods under severe conditions such as high temperatures, high pressures, and corrosive media; therefore, the quality requirements for the steel are extremely stringent.

ASME SA612 is a high-strength, killed, fine-grained carbon-manganese-silicon steel plate specifically designed for fusion-welded pressure vessels. It complies with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) and is optimized for medium- and low-temperature service conditions, where structural integrity and weight efficiency are critical.

Highlights & Benefits of ASME SA612 Vessel Steel Plates

Superior Yield Strength: With a minimum yield strength of 50 ksi (345 MPa), SA612 offers significantly higher strength than standard SA516 Grade 70, allowing for thinner plate designs.

Weight Reduction & Cost Efficiency: By using thinner SA612 plates without compromising safety, manufacturers can reduce the overall weight of the vessel, lowering material and shipping costs.

Excellent Notch Toughness: Specifically processed for fine-grain structure, ensuring high resistance to brittle fracture in lower temperature applications.

Optimized Weldability: Low carbon equivalent (CE) ensures the material maintains its properties after high-heat welding processes common in boiler fabrication.

ASME SA612 Vessel Steel Plates Chemical Composition & Mechanical Specifications

Common Applications

• Power Plant Boilers: Steam drums, headers, water-cooled furnace walls, etc.

• Petrochemicals: Reactors, heat exchangers, towers, spherical tanks (LPG, oxygen, and nitrogen storage tanks), and oil storage tanks.

• Coal Chemical Industry: Coal gasifiers, scrubbers, shift reactors.

• Fine Chemicals: Various pressurized reactors and storage tanks.

• Nuclear Power Equipment: Containment vessels, pressurizers, steam generator supports, etc. (subject to more specific nuclear-grade standards).

• Transportation: Gas cylinders/liquid tanks for rail tank cars and road tankers.

ASME SA612 vs SA516 Grade 70

Material Type Kohlenstoffstahl Manganese Silicon Alloy Steel
Zugfestigkeit 485-620 MPa 570-725 MPa
Streckgrenze Minimum 260 MPa Minimum 345 MPa
Impact Test Temperature -29°C -40°C
Typical Applications Fixed Storage Tanks Mobile LPG Tankers, Pressure Vessels
Weight Reduction Potential Standard Up to 16% Weight Saved

If any of the following conditions apply, prioritize SA612:

SA612 has a yield strength 32.69% higher than SA516 Gr.70. Under the same design pressure and dimensions, its wall thickness can be reduced by 25%, thereby lowering the overall weight of the equipment by 14% to 16%.

SA612 offers a higher tensile strength range and a greater safety margin against burst failure. It effectively resists deformation under frequent pressure changes, extending service life and reducing long-term maintenance risks.

Requires a low-temperature operating environment,A612 maintains stable impact toughness at -40°C, far exceeding the -29°C limit of SA516 Gr.70.

SA612 Thinner plates reduce weld depth, welding wire consumption, and welding time, thereby significantly improving workshop production efficiency in batch container manufacturing.

SA612 Lighter finished containers simplify the selection of lifting equipment, reduce road transport restrictions, and save on on-site construction costs.

FAQ:

1. Are ASME SA612 and ASTM A612 the same?

Yes, they are the same steel grade, with identical chemical composition and mechanical properties.

ASTM A612/A612M: A raw material standard published by ASTM International that specifies the chemical composition, tensile strength, impact strength, and thickness limits for steel plates.

ASME SA612/SA612M: ASTM A612 has been fully incorporated into ASME BPVC, Volume II, Part A; the "SA" prefix indicates that it has been certified under the ASME Pressure Vessel Code.

2. Can SA612 be used for storage tanks?

Yes, it is widely recognized for use in pressure storage tanks. It is suitable for spherical liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), ammonia, and carbon dioxide storage tanks; medium-pressure cryogenic storage tanks (liquefied natural gas, liquid nitrogen, with minimum temperatures down to -40°C); pressure buffer tanks; flash tanks; and process fluid storage tanks.

3. What is the available thickness range for GNEE's SA612?

According to ASTM/ASME basic rules: 6 mm to 25 mm.

Specialized steel mills can supply plates with thicknesses ranging from 6 mm to 100–150 mm; some mills can provide plates up to 200 mm thick. Specific thicknesses must be determined based on technical agreements, and plates thicker than 25 mm require additional impact testing and non-destructive testing.

Common stock thicknesses: 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 20, 22, and 25 mm.

4. Does SA612 require heat treatment?

Normalizing is a mandatory requirement for the standard delivery condition. Heat to 890–940°C, hold for 1.5–2.5 minutes per millimeter of thickness, and allow to cool naturally to room temperature.
