S275JR H-beams are typically supplied in a standard "as-rolled" finish, but other options are available depending on application needs and customer specification.

1. As-Rolled (Black) Condition:

Description: The natural state after hot rolling. The surface is covered with a tightly adherent, bluish-gray mill scale (iron oxide).

Advantages: Lowest cost. The scale provides a temporary barrier against atmospheric corrosion during storage and handling.

Disadvantages/Considerations: The scale must be removed (by blast cleaning, pickling, or power tool cleaning) prior to painting or galvanizing to ensure coating adhesion. For welding, the scale should be removed from the weld joint area.

2. Blast Cleaned (Shot or Grit Blasted):

Description: The beams are abrasive-blasted to remove all mill scale and rust, producing a clean, metallic white surface with a specific anchor profile (e.g., Sa 2½ according to ISO 8501-1).

Advantages: Provides an ideal surface for the immediate application of high-performance paint systems or for inspection. Offers better long-term corrosion protection when painted.

3. Painted/Primed:

Description: After blast cleaning, a shop-applied primer (often an epoxy or zinc-rich primer) is applied.

Advantages: Provides immediate corrosion protection for the structure during transport, storage, and erection before the final paint system is applied on-site.

4. Hot-Dip Galvanized:

Description: The beams are dipped in a bath of molten zinc after thorough cleaning and fluxing.

Advantages: Provides long-term, durable corrosion protection for decades without maintenance, ideal for exposed structures, marine environments, or highly corrosive industrial atmospheres.

Note: Galvanizing S275JR is common, but fabricators must be aware of the risk of liquid metal assisted cracking (LMAC) on high-silicon steels under stress. S275JR's silicon content is usually low enough to avoid this issue, but design details (like vent/drain holes) are crucial.
