Introduction
09CuPCrNi-A and 09CuPCrNi-B are both high-quality weathering steel (Corten steel) grades, widely used in bridges, industrial storage tanks, containers, and urban infrastructure.
Their yield strengths are ≥345 MPa (A) and ≥355 MPa (B), tensile strengths range from 490–620 MPa (A) and 510–630 MPa (B), with elongation rates of 20% (A) and 18% (B). Plate thicknesses can be adjusted according to structural requirements (6–15 mm).
While both exhibit excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance with typical corrosion rates below 0.02–0.03 mm/year, with rust layers stabilizing within 8–12 months and service lives reaching 40–80 years.
However, significant differences exist in mechanical properties, ductility, and typical applications: 09CuPCrNi-B is better suited for heavy-load structures, while 09CuPCrNi-A is more appropriate for curved surfaces or decorative projects.

Weathering Performance Comparison

Atmospheric corrosion rate (uncoated, exposed for 1 year): 09CuPCrNi-A ~0.025 mm/year, 09CuPCrNi-B ~0.020 mm/year.
Time to stable rust layer formation: A approximately 10–12 months, B approximately 8–10 months.
Corrosion resistance lifespan: 09CuPCrNi-A 40–60 years, 09CuPCrNi-B 50–80 years (determined based on environmental variations).
09CuPCrNi-B exhibits longer weathering durability and is more suitable for highly corrosive environments such as heavily polluted or coastal areas.
Machinability and Weldability
09CuPCrNi-A: Good ductility, suitable for bending, stamping, and welding; no cracking in the heat-affected zone after welding.
09CuPCrNi-B: High strength but slightly lower ductility; slightly more difficult to machine than A, yet still possesses good weldability.
Using 09CuPCrNi-A and 09CuPCrNi-B in outdoor sculptures and landscape design provides a balance of artistic beauty, mechanical strength, and corrosion resistance.

09CuPCrNi-A is suitable for moderate exposure and decorative installations, while 09CuPCrNi-B excels in harsh coastal or industrial environments.
Selecting the appropriate Corten steel plate ensures long-lasting weathering steel performance and visually appealing patina evolution.
