What is channel steel?

Channel steel, also known as C channel or U channel (depending on the profile), is a type of structural steel with a "C" or "U" shaped cross section. S235JR channel steel refers to channel profiles made from S235JR grade, which are widely used in construction, machinery and framing applications.

S235JR c section steel is a non-alloy structural steel grade defined by European standard EN 10025-2, "S" stands for structural steel, "235" indicates a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa (thickness ≤ 16 mm), and "JR" indicates that the steel has a minimum energy value of 27 Joules in a Charpy impact test at 20°C, ensuring good toughness at room temperature.

Sizes and specifications

S235JR channel steel is available in a variety of standard sizes, usually in accordance with EN 10056 (structural steel equal and unequal angles) or similar standards. Common specifications include:
Height (h): 50 mm to 400 mm
Web thickness (t_w): 4 mm to 15 mm
Flange width (b): 25 mm to 100 mm
Flange thickness (t_f): 5 mm to 20 mm
Length: Typically 6 m, 12 m or custom lengths
Exact dimensions depend on manufacturer and regional standards (e.g. European UPN or UPE profiles).

Manufacturing process

S235JR channel c steel is produced by hot rolling, a process that heats the steel billet to above the recrystallization temperature and then forms it into a channel shape through rollers. After rolling, the steel is cooled, cut to length, and can be surface treated, such as shot peening or galvanizing, for corrosion protection if required.

Comparison with other grades

S275JR c channel: Higher yield strength (275 MPa), but similar weldability and ductility.
S355JR c channel steel: Higher strength (355 MPa) for more demanding applications.
A36 (ASTM) channel steel beam: A comparable US grade with similar properties but governed by ASTM standards.
S235JR is often chosen when strength requirements are modest and cost is a key factor.
