Corten Steel Sheet Product Description
Weathering steel is a family of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) specifications and several trademarked specifications with similar corrosion resistance properties.
ASTM specifications include A588 corten steel plate, A242 corten steel sheet, A606-4 weathering steel sheet, A847 corten steel sheet metal, A871-65 corten sheet and A709-50W weathering steel sheet. The main trademarked product is Cor-ten®.
Cor-Ten® is the trade name for an atmospheric corrosion-resistant steel developed by United States Steel Company (USS) for use in materials requiring higher strength and longer life. These steels naturally develop a layer of rust or patina when exposed to various atmospheric conditions. This layer of rust protects the material from future corrosion.
ASTM corten structural steel advantages:
Broad appeal: Welding corten steel's resistance to atmospheric corrosion allows it to be used without painting in many structural and architectural applications, such as bridges, open buildings, transmission towers and sculptures. In addition, weathering steel welding has the advantage of being resistant to high temperatures, making it suitable for flues, chimneys and pipes.
Practical Advantages: For structures exposed to the elements, corten metal sheet offers significant advantages over other metals.
Aesthetic appearance: Mature atmospheric steel has an attractive appearance and often blends well with its environment. Its appearance will change and improve with age.
High temperature advantages: Using atmospheric corrosion resistant steel can reduce the oxidation loss of steel at high temperatures above 400 degrees Celsius. At these temperatures, patina can form even in the absence of water.
