The H-shaped carbon steel, H-beam, also known as I-beam, Weam (meaning "wide flange"), Universal Beam (UB), Rolled Steel Joist (RSJ) or Double T (especially in Polish, Bulgarian, Spanish, Italian and German), are beams with I-shaped or H-shaped cross-sections. The horizontal element of the "I" is the flange, while the vertical element is called the "web". H-beams are usually made from structural steel and are used in construction and civil engineering. The web resists the shear force, whereas the flange resists most of the bending moments experienced by the beam. Beam theory shows that the I-section is a very efficient form that can carry both bending and shear loads in the web plane. On the other hand, the cross-section has a reduced load-bearing capacity in the transverse direction and is inefficient in load-bearing torsion, for which hollow structural cross-sections are often preferred.
