The Difference Between S355J0W and S355J0 Steel

Leave a message

S355J0W Weathering Steel and S355J0 Weathering Steel have similar specified strength levels, but they are designed for different service environments.

The fundamental difference is that S355J0W Weathering Steel is an EN 10025-5 structural steel with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance, while S355J0 is a conventional structural steel specified under EN 10025-2.

Both grades can provide a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm and a minimum Charpy impact energy of 27 J at 0°C. However, S355J0W Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance Steel contains controlled amounts of copper, chromium and nickel that promote the formation of a protective patina during outdoor exposure.

S355J0 does not have the same weathering-alloy requirements and normally needs painting, galvanizing or another corrosion-protection system.

What Is S355J0W Weathering Steel?

S355J0W Weathering Steel is a high-strength structural steel manufactured according to EN 10025-5. Under suitable alternating wet and dry conditions, it develops a compact oxide layer that slows further atmospheric corrosion.

Because of this characteristic, S355J0W Corten Steel is commonly used for bridges, railway vehicles, containers, industrial structures, façades, outdoor sculptures and landscape components.

S355J0W can be supplied in +AR or +N delivery condition, depending on the ordered thickness and project specification.

What Is S355J0 Structural Steel?

S355J0 is a conventional carbon-manganese structural steel manufactured according to EN 10025-2. It offers good strength, weldability and fabrication performance for buildings, machinery, structural frames, platforms, tanks and general engineering components.

Unlike S355J0W Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance Steel, S355J0 is not designed to form a corrosion-inhibiting weathering patina. When used outdoors, it normally requires paint, galvanizing or another suitable protective coating.

S355J0W Weathering Steel and S355J0 Chemical Composition

The chemical composition is the main reason for their different atmospheric corrosion performance.

Element S355J0W S355J0
Carbon ≤0.16% ≤0.20% for thinner products; thickness-dependent
Manganese 0.50–1.50% ≤1.60%
Silicon ≤0.50% ≤0.55%
Phosphorus ≤0.035% ≤0.035%, depending on standard edition
Sulfur ≤0.035% ≤0.035%, depending on standard edition
Copper 0.25–0.55% No minimum weathering requirement
Chromium 0.40–0.80% Not specifically required
Nickel ≤0.65% Not specifically required

Actual values must be confirmed through the relevant standard edition and Mill Test Certificate.

Are S355J0W and S355J0 Equally Strong?

For common plate thicknesses, their specified yield strength, tensile strength and impact toughness can be very similar. For example, both grades have a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm.

This does not make them interchangeable. Mechanical strength is only one part of material selection. The designer must also consider atmospheric exposure, corrosion allowance, coating system, welding consumables, structural design code and required service life.

S355J0W vs S355J0 Corrosion Resistance

The Cu, Cr and Ni content of S355J0W Corten Steel helps form a dense and adherent patina. When the surface experiences repeated wetting and drying, this layer gradually reduces the corrosion rate.

S355J0 forms ordinary rust without the same protective mechanism. If S355J0 is left unpainted outdoors, corrosion can continue and loose rust may detach from the surface.

However, S355J0W should not automatically be used without coating in permanently wet, buried, marine, chloride-rich or poorly drained environments. These conditions require a corrosion assessment and may still require painting.

S355J0W or S355J0: Which Should You Choose?

Choose S355J0W Weathering Steel when:

  • Improved atmospheric corrosion resistance is required.
  • The structure will experience suitable wet–dry cycles.
  • Reduced painting and maintenance are project objectives.
  • A natural rust-brown architectural surface is required.

The application involves bridges, façades, railway vehicles or outdoor structures.

Choose S355J0 when:

  • The structure will be painted or galvanized.
  • Atmospheric corrosion resistance is not a primary requirement.
  • The project specifies EN 10025-2.
  • Standard structural steel availability and lower initial material cost are priorities.

The application is indoor or protected from direct weather exposure.
