What Is the Difference Between S355J0W and A588 Gr.A Steel?
S355J0W and ASTM A588 Grade A are both high-strength weathering structural steels. They contain copper, chromium and other alloying elements that improve atmospheric corrosion resistance and help form a protective patina under suitable exposure conditions.
The main difference is that S355J0W Weathering Steel is specified under the European EN 10025-5 standard, while A588 Gr.A is specified under the American ASTM A588/A588M standard. Their strength and applications are similar, but their chemical limits, thickness-dependent mechanical requirements, impact-test provisions and certification systems are not identical.
Therefore, S355J0W Corten Steel and A588 Gr.A should be considered comparable weathering steels rather than automatically interchangeable grades.

S355J0W Weathering Steel vs A588 Gr.A Standards
| Item | S355J0W | ASTM A588 Gr.A |
|---|---|---|
| Main standard | EN 10025-5 | ASTM A588/A588M |
| Standard system | European | American |
| Material type | Weather-resistant structural steel | HSLA weathering structural steel |
| Common unit system | MPa and mm | ksi, inches and metric equivalents |
| Product use | Welded, bolted and riveted structures | Welded, bolted and riveted structures |
| Certification | EN 10204 3.1/3.2 | ASTM material certification/MTR |
| Typical applications | Bridges, buildings, vehicles and containers | Bridges, buildings and structural components |
Mechanical Properties of S355J0W and A588 Gr.A
| Property | S355J0W | ASTM A588 Gr.A |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum yield strength | 355 MPa for thickness ≤16 mm | 50 ksi or approximately 345 MPa for thickness ≤4 in. |
| Tensile strength | 470–630 MPa for 5–100 mm | Minimum 70 ksi or approximately 485 MPa for thickness ≤4 in. |
| Typical minimum elongation | 20% transverse for common plate thicknesses | 21% in 2 in. |
| Standard impact value | 27 J at 0°C for S355J0W | Not a universal base requirement; specify when needed |
S355J0W has a slightly higher nominal minimum yield strength for thin plate, while A588 Gr.A has a similar overall structural strength level. The exact mechanical requirements of both materials change with thickness.
For bridges, cold regions or dynamically loaded structures, the purchaser should clearly state the required Charpy temperature, absorbed energy, specimen orientation and test frequency.
Chemical Composition of S355J0W vs A588 Gr.A
| Element | S355J0W | ASTM A588 Gr.A |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon | ≤0.16% | ≤0.19% |
| Manganese | 0.50–1.50% | 0.80–1.25% |
| Phosphorus | ≤0.035% | ≤0.030% |
| Sulfur | ≤0.035% | ≤0.030% |
| Silicon | ≤0.50% | 0.03–0.65% |
| Copper | 0.25–0.55% | 0.25–0.40% |
| Chromium | 0.40–0.80% | 0.40–0.65% |
| Nickel | ≤0.65% | ≤0.40% |
| Vanadium | Not a fixed standard range in this comparison | 0.02–0.10% |
The table shows that both grades use copper and chromium to improve atmospheric corrosion resistance. However, their permitted composition ranges are different. A588 Gr.A also specifies vanadium, while S355J0W Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance Steel allows a wider nickel limit.
Corrosion Resistance of S355J0W and A588 Gr.A
Both materials can form a protective patina when exposed to repeated wet and dry cycles. This allows suitable structures to be used without conventional painting and can reduce long-term maintenance.
Their corrosion performance depends on:
- Local humidity and rainfall
- Chloride and salt exposure
- Industrial pollutants
- Surface orientation
- Drainage and ventilation
- Frequency of wet–dry cycling
- Crevices and water-retaining details
Neither grade should automatically be used unpainted in permanently wet, submerged, buried or severe marine environments. An environmental assessment and corrosion allowance are required.

Can S355J0W Replace ASTM A588 Gr.A?
S355J0W may be considered as a technical alternative to A588 Gr.A in some projects because their strength levels and weathering functions are similar. However, it is not an automatic one-to-one substitution.
Before replacement, the engineer should compare:
- Governing design and material standard
- Required yield and tensile strength
- Plate thickness
- Chemical composition and carbon equivalent
- Charpy impact requirements
- Welding procedure and consumables
- Corrosion-resistance requirements
- Dimensional tolerances
- Inspection and certification requirements
- Approval by the project designer or end user
A dual-certified plate should only be described as meeting both grades when both specifications are clearly shown on the original Mill Test Report.

S355J0W or A588 Gr.A: How to Choose?
Choose S355J0W Weathering Steel when the drawing, structural design or procurement specification is based on EN standards. It is also suitable when EN 10204 certification and metric dimensions are required.
Choose ASTM A588 Gr.A when the project is designed according to ASTM, AASHTO or other American requirements, or when the drawing explicitly specifies A588 Grade A.
For international projects, do not select a grade based only on the term "Corten steel." Always confirm the exact standard and grade.
