S355J0W is a European weather-resistant structural steel specified under EN 10025-5. Buyers frequently compare it with ASTM A588 Grade A, COR-TEN B, Q355NH and SMA490AW when sourcing weathering steel under different national standards.
However, there is no universal one-to-one S355J0W equivalent steel covering every chemical, mechanical, dimensional and inspection requirement. These grades may have similar strength and atmospheric corrosion resistance, but they are governed by different standards.
Any substitution for S355J0W Weathering Steel must be approved after reviewing the applicable standard, plate thickness, chemical composition, yield strength, tensile strength, impact toughness, delivery condition and welding requirements.

These properties make S355J0W Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance Steel suitable for welded, bolted and riveted structures exposed to outdoor environments.
S355J0W Equivalent Steel Grades
| Standard or System | Grade | Relationship to S355J0W |
|---|---|---|
| EN 10025-5 | S355J0W | Current European designation |
| EN 10155:1993 | S355J0W | Historical European designation |
| NF A 35-502 | E36 WB3 | Historical French cross-reference |
| UNE 36082 | AE355 W2 C | Historical Spanish cross-reference |
| BS 4360 | WR50B | Historical British cross-reference |
| ASTM A588/A588M | A588 Grade A | Common American comparison; not identical |
| SSAB grade | COR-TEN B | Similar branded weathering steel; verify certification |
| GB/T 4171 | Q355NH | Common Chinese comparison; not identical |
| JIS G 3114 | SMA490AW | Common Japanese comparison; not identical |
The historical European cross-references are based on older grade-comparison systems. ASTM A588 Gr.A, COR-TEN B, Q355NH and SMA490AW are commonly compared alternatives, but they should not be stated as exact equivalents without technical verification.
Is ASTM A588 Gr.A Equivalent to S355J0W?
ASTM A588 Gr.A is one of the most common American grades compared with S355J0W Corten Steel. Both provide approximately 345–355 MPa minimum yield strength in common thickness ranges and both use copper and chromium to improve atmospheric corrosion resistance.
However, their chemical composition limits and mechanical test requirements differ.
| Property | S355J0W | ASTM A588 Gr.A |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | EN 10025-5 | ASTM A588/A588M |
| Minimum yield strength | 355 MPa for ≤16 mm | 345 MPa for ≤4 in. |
| Tensile strength | 470–630 MPa | Minimum approximately 485 MPa |
| Carbon | ≤0.16% | ≤0.19% |
| Copper | 0.25–0.55% | 0.25–0.40% |
| Chromium | 0.40–0.80% | 0.40–0.65% |
| Nickel | ≤0.65% | ≤0.40% |
| Standard impact provision | 27 J at 0°C | Must be specified where required |
A588 Gr.A can therefore be considered a possible alternative, but substitution requires engineering approval.
Is COR-TEN B Equivalent to S355J0W?
COR-TEN B is a proprietary weathering steel grade commonly compared with S355J0W because both are used for higher-strength outdoor structural applications.
The term "Corten" is often used commercially for weathering steel, which is why S355J0W is frequently marketed as S355J0W Corten Steel. Nevertheless, COR-TEN is a registered trademark. A generic S355J0W plate should not be certified as branded COR-TEN B unless the producer's documentation confirms it.
For procurement, the EN 10025-5 designation and MTC should take precedence over a general commercial name.
Is Q355NH Equivalent to S355J0W?
Q355NH is a Chinese high-weather-resistance structural steel under GB/T 4171. It has a comparable nominal yield-strength level and is used for railway equipment, containers, bridges and outdoor structures.
However, Q355NH and S355J0W Weathering Steel have different chemical limits, test methods, thickness-based strength rules and certification requirements. Q355NH should be treated as a comparable Chinese grade rather than an automatic equivalent.
Is SMA490AW Equivalent to S355J0W?
SMA490AW is a Japanese weathering steel under JIS G 3114. It is used for welded structures requiring improved atmospheric corrosion resistance.
Its strength level and applications are broadly comparable with S355J0W, but the Japanese and European standards use different chemical composition limits and mechanical-property rules. Project approval is required before replacement.
