What is the difference between HSS cobalt M35 and M42?

M42 steel (w2mo9cr4vco is a kind of high cobalt toughness of cold-drilling die, mainly used for high toughness precision wear-resistant NMware, can also be used for cutting tools and cutting tool cooling, the steel NMness is high, up to 70hrc, hot NMness is good, high-temperature NMness, easy to grind.

M35 high-speed steel and M42 high-speed steel alloy composition and content is different, performance is very different, applications are also very different.MM35 and M42 high-speed steel chemical composition is slightly different.

M42 HSS contains 6% tungsten, 5% molybdenum, 4% chromium and 2% vanadium, while M35 HSS contains 5% tungsten, 5% molybdenum, 4% chromium and 5% cobalt, and M42 HSS contains 10% tungsten, 2% molybdenum, 8% cobalt and 5% chromium.

High Speed Steel

In terms of physical properties, M35 has higher toughness, NMness and wear resistance than m42. Also, the high-temperature-resistant element cobalt gives good drill performance.

M42 has much higher NMness and better overall performance than M35.

The main difference between the two is the alloy composition contained in different ratios, M42 process is more complex, the price is also higher, relatively speaking, M42 mechanical performance indicators are higher, NMness, wear resistance, impact resistance is better.
AISI M42 tool steel is a cobalt-alloyed high-speed steel that is routinely manufactured. The various stages of the manufacturing process are selected and controlled in order to obtain a final product with good structure in terms of carbide size and distribution. This is a distinct advantage for finished tools.
