ASME SA612 is a standard for high-strength killed steel specified in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Volume II. It is an alloy containing manganese and silicon, intended for use in welded pressure vessels operating at moderate to low temperatures. This standard is optimized for welded boilers, industrial pressure vessels, and storage tanks operating under moderate to low-temperature conditions.
Standard System and Equivalence:Equivalence with ASTM A612
ASME SA612 is fully harmonized with the ASTM A612 carbon steel plate standard and is technically identical. Both specifications have the same chemical composition limits, mechanical property thresholds, grain size control rules, and delivery condition requirements;
The only difference lies in the publication system:
- ASTM A612 is a general materials specification of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM),
- ASME SA612 is specifically intended for pressure equipment engineering.

Heat Treatment and Delivery Conditions
ASME SA612 steel plates are primarily supplied in two production conditions, depending on customer design requirements:
Normalized Condition (Normalizing)
Normalizing Process: The steel plate is heated to a temperature above the A3 transformation point (approximately 890–950°C), held for a sufficient time to achieve complete austenitization, and then uniformly air-cooled to room temperature.
Normalizing fully refines the internal grain structure, eliminates rolling residual stresses, and provides the most stable low-temperature impact toughness. This is critical for SA612 steel plates used in critical low-temperature pressure vessels that require Charpy V-notch impact test certification.
Hot-rolled condition (hot-rolled)
Delivered directly after controlled hot rolling without additional heat treatment; suitable only for thin-gauge steel plates operating at moderate temperatures with low toughness requirements. Offers significant cost advantages compared to the normalized condition.
Why SA612 for Pressure Vessel and Storage Tank Fabrication

1. High Strength-to-Weight Ratio
SA612 has a minimum yield strength of 345 MPa (50 ksi), which is significantly higher than that of standard vessel plates such as A516 Gr60 (248 MPa) and the A283 series of mild carbon steel plates.
2. Superior Notch Toughness
The SA612 standard mandates fine-grain smelting (grain size ≥ Grade 5). It employs aluminum deoxidation for fine-grain strengthening combined with a manganese-silicon alloying ratio. When supplied in a normalized condition, this ensures stable low- and medium-temperature impact performance, making it suitable for applications such as liquefied gas, air separation, and cryogenic buffer tanks.
3. Excellent Weldability
SA612 strictly limits carbon, phosphorus, and sulfur content and precisely controls the carbon equivalent (CEV) within a low range, thereby preventing welding defects at the material level. It is suitable for on-site continuous welding of large storage tanks and batch production of circumferential welds on tank shells:
4. Stable Pressure Resistance
Tensile strength is consistently maintained within the range of 560–695 MPa. Mechanical property variations within the same batch and for the same plate thickness are minimal, eliminating the risk of localized strength deficiencies and ensuring uniform pressure-bearing capacity across all sections of the cylinder. With an elongation after fracture of ≥19%, the material possesses excellent plastic deformation buffering capacity.

Typical Industry Applications
- Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Storage Tanks
- Compressed Gas Containers: Designed for high-pressure environments.
- Spherical Tanks
- Chemical Industry: Reactors and towers.
How to Recognize an Original and Certified ASTM A612 steel plates?
Pictograms, stencils, or stampings are how the plate declares its composition. These markings are mandatory on critical steels such as ASTM A612 and include:
1. The Standard: ASTM A612
2. The Heat Number: Unique identifier of the casting batch
3. The Manufacturer.
For its part, the Hardness Test (with durometer) is a quick surface check that confirms the expected resistance of the material.

FAQ:
What thicknesses of ASME SA612 do you supply?
We supply ASME SA612 steel plate in thicknesses ranging from 6mm to 150mm. For special applications requiring non-standard thicknesses, we can often accommodate custom orders with minimum quantity requirements. Our technical team can help determine the optimal thickness for your specific application based on design pressure, vessel diameter, and other factors
Is SA612 easy to weld?
Yes, SA612 is much easier to weld than standard SA516 Gr70 especially for thick plates and high-pressure equipment. Its controlled low carbon equivalent minimizes hardening and cracking risks in heat-affected zones, requiring simpler welding procedures and lower preheat temperature. It is a preferred grade for manufacturers pursuing stable, high-efficiency vessel welding production.
