Welding Performance Advantages of SA612 Steel Plates
SA612 is a fine-grained steel specifically designed for pressure vessels. Its carbon equivalent is strictly controlled during production, and the steel exhibits low hardenability, making it compatible with the full range of mainstream welding processes used for pressure vessels.
When welded in accordance with specifications, the mechanical properties and low-temperature impact properties of the welded joints meet ASME standards for non-destructive testing (UT/RT/MT) of pressure-retaining equipment, with no limitations on weldability.
Recommended Welding Methods
SMAW (Manual Metal Arc Welding)
SAW (Submerged Arc Welding)
FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding)
GMAW (Solid Wire Gas Metal Arc Welding) (MAG/MIG)

Preheating Specifications by Plate Thickness (General Standards for Pressure Vessels)
Thickness < 25 mm: No preheating required at ambient temperatures above 5°C; when the ambient temperature is below 0°C, preheat to a minimum of 50°C to prevent brittle fracture due to rapid cooling.
Thickness 25–50 mm: Mandatory preheating to 50–100°C; heat uniformly within a 75 mm range on either side of the weld. During multi-pass welding, the interpass temperature must not fall below 50°C.
Thickness > 50 mm: Mandatory preheating to 100–150°C; use a heating blanket for uniform preheating of the entire section; maintain an interpass temperature of 100–200°C; if the temperature falls below the lower limit, reheat before continuing welding.
Additional Key Considerations for Welding
Control the upper limit of the interpass temperature at 250°C; excessively high temperatures can cause grain coarsening in the heat-affected zone, compromising the core advantage of SA612's fine-grained low-temperature impact toughness;
For equipment with a thickness of 32 mm or greater operating under low-temperature, high-pressure conditions, post-weld stress-relief heat treatment is recommended: hold at 590–650°C for 1 hour per 25 mm of thickness, followed by slow cooling with the furnace to eliminate residual welding stresses;
For thick plates 25 mm or greater, it is recommended to let the weld stand for 24 hours before performing MT/UT non-destructive testing to avoid missing delayed hydrogen-induced cold cracks.
ASME SA612 vs SA516 Grade 70 :Higher Strength
| Grade | Minimum Yield Strength |
|---|---|
| SA516 Gr70 | 260 MPa |
| SA612 | 345 MPa |
SA612 features much higher minimum yield strength compared to common SA516 Gr70 carbon vessel plate, bringing multiple cost & structural advantages for pressure vessel manufacturers:
Higher allowable design stress Under identical design pressure, design temperature and vessel diameter, SA612 can bear higher allowable stress as per ASME VIII code. It meets high-pressure working requirements without oversize material selection.
Reduced plate thickness Thanks to its 345 MPa yield strength, designers can adopt thinner wall thickness for vessel shells and heads, while still satisfying safety strength standards. Thick heavy plates with expensive raw material and high processing cost can be avoided.
Lighter overall equipment weight Thinner steel plate largely cuts the dead weight of finished pressure vessels. It lowers transportation fees, lifting costs and foundation construction investment for end users.
Applications of ASME SA612 Pressure Vessel Steel Plates
1. Petroleum Industry: Manufacture of reactors, storage tanks (such as oil tanks and liquefied petroleum gas tanks), and other storage equipment
2. Chemical Industry: Key equipment such as heat exchangers, separators, and columns, as well as corrosion-resistant components
3. Power Generation Industry: Boilers and steam generators; high-pressure water pipes in hydroelectric power plants
4. Boiler Industry: Boiler drums, steam turbine casings, etc.

Choose ASME SA612 When All or Most Items Apply
1. The vessel requires higher structural yield strength for medium/high pressure design;
2. You need weight reduction for transportation, lifting or foundation construction;
3. Design calculation supports thinner wall thickness to save steel consumption;
4. Working environment involves medium or low temperature down to -40℃;
5. Equipment stores liquefied cryogenic media with combined pressure & cold service;
6. Long-term operation safety is prioritized over short-term raw material budget.
