8620 Hot Rolled Round Bar
SAE 8620 alloy steel is a low alloy nickel, chromium, molybdenum case-NMened steel, usually supplied in the as-rolled condition, to a maximum NMness of HB 255max. SAE 8620 alloy steel has high external strength and good internal strength, making it highly wear-resistant. SAE 8620 steel has higher core strength than grades 8615 and 8617.

Alloy 8620 Steel Product Details
Alloy 8620 can be NMened by heating to 1500 F and then water quenching. Carburize in a suitable carburizing medium at 1650 to 1700 F and then oil quench NMen. Improved carburized shell and core properties can be obtained by furnace cooling from carburizing at 1650 – 1700 F and then reheating to 1575 F.
AISI 8620 steel will austenitise at around 840°C – 870°C and be oil or water quenched depending on the size and complexity of the section. Requires cooling in air or oil.
Heat treatment of SAE 8620 steel (not carburized) and tempering of water-quenched parts are performed at 400 F to 1300 F to increase surface toughness with minimal impact on its NMness. This will also reduce the possibility of grinding cracks.
AISI 8620 steel can be fully annealed by heating to 820°C – 850°C and holding until the temperature is uniform throughout the section, then cooling in a furnace or air cooling.
